Beyond Networking: Connecting Alaska Manufacturers with the Resources They Need

AKMA's September M.F.G. Mixer brought manufacturers, industry partners, and resource organizations together for an evening of meaningful connections and collaboration.

On September 17, the Alaska Manufacturing Association (AKMA) hosted its latest Manufacturing Mixer at Mountain Dog in Palmer as part of Alaska Entrepreneurship Week (AKEW).

Our host, Mountain Dog, was recently recognized as the 2025 Made in Alaska Manufacturer of the Year. We were excited to celebrate their achievement, learn more about their manufacturing journey, and bring Alaska's manufacturing community together in their space.

While networking is always an important part of our mixers, we wanted this event to go a little deeper.

Turning Introductions into Meaningful Conversations

We kicked off the evening by going around the room, giving everyone an opportunity to introduce themselves, share what their business does, and talk about what they're working toward.

As we listened, three distinct areas of interest emerged. Rather than sticking to our usual networking format, we divided attendees into three smaller discussion groups based on the challenges and opportunities most relevant to them.

Exporting: Expanding Beyond Alaska

For manufacturers exploring markets outside Alaska, the conversation centered on the opportunities and complexities of reaching new customers beyond our borders.

Expanding into new markets brings questions about logistics, international trade requirements, market access, and finding the right resources to support growth.

New & Emerging Manufacturers: From Idea to Market

Every manufacturer starts somewhere. This group brought together entrepreneurs and newer businesses navigating the early stages of bringing their products to market.

From prototypes and production planning to identifying resources and understanding the next steps in growing a business, the conversation created an opportunity to learn from others and explore potential pathways forward.

Moving & Selling Products Throughout Alaska

Manufacturing in Alaska comes with unique logistical challenges. Moving products between communities, navigating distribution channels, and building relationships with retailers can all create obstacles for growing businesses.

This group focused on the realities of getting Alaska-made products into the hands of customers throughout the state and the opportunities to strengthen those connections.

Bringing the Right Resources into the Room

One of the most valuable parts of the evening was having representatives from organizations that support business development and manufacturing growth participating directly in these conversations.

We were fortunate to have attendees from:

Their participation made a tremendous difference.

Rather than simply talking about challenges and hoping to find answers later, manufacturers had the opportunity to ask questions directly, hear from people with specialized knowledge, and learn about resources that may be available to help them move forward.

Just as importantly, the discussions gave these organizations an opportunity to hear firsthand what Alaska manufacturers are experiencing.

That's the kind of collaboration we want to continue building through AKMA.

Manufacturers don't always know which organizations, programs, or people can help them overcome the next hurdle. Sometimes, the most valuable thing we can do is bring the right people together and start the conversation.

Building a More Connected Manufacturing Community

Manufacturing can be challenging anywhere, but Alaska presents a unique set of circumstances. From transportation costs and supply chains to accessing markets and scaling production, our manufacturers often face obstacles that require creative solutions and strong partnerships.

No single business or organization has all the answers.

That's why connection is such an important part of AKMA's mission.

Our M.F.G. Mixers are designed to be more than an opportunity to exchange business cards. We want attendees to leave having met someone who understands their challenges, discovered a potential resource, or made a connection that could help move their business forward.

The conversations at Mountain Dog were a great reminder of what's possible when manufacturers and supporting organizations come together with a willingness to share their knowledge and experiences.

Thank You for Being Part of It

A special thank you to Mountain Dog for opening their doors and hosting our manufacturing community, and congratulations again on being named the 2025 Made in Alaska Manufacturer of the Year!

We're also grateful to the U.S. Commercial Service, UAF, SBA, and SBDC representatives who joined us and shared their expertise.

And most importantly, thank you to every manufacturer, entrepreneur, and industry partner who showed up, participated, asked questions, and offered to help someone else.

These events wouldn't be possible without the people who make up Alaska's manufacturing community.
