Alaska Manufacturing Day Proclamation Recognizes the Businesses Making Products Here at Home

October 2 has been officially recognized as Alaska Manufacturing Day, thanks to a proclamation from the Office of the Governor.
For Alaska manufacturers, this recognition is more than a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to bring visibility to the businesses making, producing, processing, fabricating, and building products across the state.
Manufacturing in Alaska looks different than it does in many other places. Our manufacturers operate across long distances, high freight costs, limited infrastructure, workforce challenges, and smaller local markets. Yet they continue to create products, solve problems, support jobs, and strengthen Alaska’s economy.
That is worth recognizing.
What Is a Proclamation?
A proclamation is an official statement issued by a government office to recognize a specific day, week, month, event, cause, or group.
In this case, the Governor’s Office issued a proclamation recognizing October 2 as Alaska Manufacturing Day.
A proclamation does not create a new law or program. Instead, it serves as a formal acknowledgment from the State of Alaska that manufacturing matters and deserves public recognition.
It helps bring attention to an issue, industry, or community that is important to the state.
How Did Alaska Manufacturing Day Get Recognized?
This proclamation did not happen automatically.
AKMA submitted a request through the Governor’s Office asking for October 2 to be recognized as Alaska Manufacturing Day. We submitted the required information, including details about why manufacturing matters in Alaska and why this day should be recognized.
After review, the proclamation was approved and issued by the Governor’s Office.
For AKMA, this was an important step in helping elevate the visibility of Alaska’s manufacturing sector. Our goal is to make sure manufacturers are seen, included, and recognized as part of Alaska’s economic future.
Why October 2?
Manufacturing Day is recognized nationally each year as a way to celebrate modern manufacturing and inspire more awareness around careers, businesses, and opportunities in the industry.
In Alaska, October 2 gives us a dedicated day to recognize the manufacturers working across our communities — from food producers and seafood processors to fabricators, outdoor gear companies, wood product makers, pet product manufacturers, energy-related businesses, and more.
At AKMA, we also see this as part of a broader opportunity to celebrate Manufacturing Month throughout October.
One day can spark attention. A full month gives us more room to tell the stories.
What Does This Do for Alaska Manufacturers?
The proclamation helps create visibility.
It gives Alaska manufacturers a recognized moment to share their work, talk about their challenges, celebrate their teams, and help the public better understand what is being made here.
That visibility matters because manufacturing is often happening behind the scenes.
Many people see the finished product on a shelf, in a home, on a job site, or in a supply chain, but they may not see the people, equipment, problem-solving, and logistics behind it.
The proclamation helps bring that work forward.
It also gives AKMA, manufacturers, partners, and community leaders a shared opportunity to talk about why manufacturing is important to Alaska.
Manufacturing supports local jobs.
It keeps more dollars circulating in the state.
It strengthens supply chains.
It creates value from Alaska resources.
It supports food security, infrastructure, logistics, energy, housing, defense, and community resilience.
It gives Alaskans more control over what we make, repair, process, package, and produce.
Why Recognition Matters
Alaska manufacturers face challenges that are unique to our state.
Shipping costs are high.
Materials can be hard to source.
Production space can be limited.
Energy costs matter.
Workforce can be difficult to find.
Distribution across Alaska is complex.
Scaling into larger markets takes persistence and support.
Despite those challenges, manufacturers continue to build businesses here.
They are creating products with Alaska identity, solving local problems, and finding ways to serve customers across the state and beyond.
Recognition alone does not solve every challenge, but it helps start the conversation. It gives manufacturers a stronger platform to talk about what they need, where they are growing, and how Alaska can better support production-based businesses.
A Moment to Celebrate and Build Momentum
Alaska Manufacturing Day is a chance to celebrate the businesses already doing the work, but it is also a chance to look ahead.
If Alaska wants a stronger economy, we need to support the businesses that make things here.
That means investing in workforce development, improving logistics, strengthening supply chains, supporting local purchasing, expanding market access, and helping manufacturers connect with the resources they need to grow.
The proclamation is one piece of that larger effort.
It gives us a formal moment to say: Alaska manufacturing matters.
AKMA’s Role
The Alaska Manufacturing Association was created to connect, support, and advocate for manufacturers across the state.
Requesting this proclamation is one way AKMA is working to bring more visibility to the industry. We want manufacturers to be part of conversations about economic development, workforce, infrastructure, food systems, energy, logistics, and state growth.
Manufacturing is not just one sector. It touches many parts of Alaska’s economy.
By recognizing October 2 as Alaska Manufacturing Day, we have an opportunity to highlight the businesses making products here, the people behind those products, and the role manufacturing can play in Alaska’s future.
Help Us Celebrate Alaska Manufacturing Month
